NEVER GAMBLE YOUR HEART: Can you spot the cover changes?
Are you fascinated with the process of making covers? I know I am, which is why today I’m going to give you a tiny, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of the covers for The Secret Society of Governess Spies. But I’ll be honest, even I have only the vaguest understanding of how the process is done, so this post will be from the lens of an author rather than a visual creator or cover designer.
To start, there are three main ways to make covers:
A photo shoot
An illustration
Graphics
When we first began the process of publishing The Secret Society of Governess Spies series, I wasn’t sure what kind of cover I was going to get. Illustrated had been popular for a while at the time, so I was surprised when a photographed cover landed in my inbox (but I loved it!) Decades ago, almost all historical romance covers were photographed—or “clinch” covers, but trends had changed. It seemed like a little bit of a throwback with a modern feel, and I was really happy with that.
I knew for this series I wanted big beautiful dresses on the covers, and that’s exactly what I got. The great thing about working with my publisher is that they take into account my desires and concerns. For all three of the covers for The Secret Society of Governess Spies, there was a photoshoot with a model, and then the photos were edited and designed by Daniela Medina to make the gorgeous final product.
For today’s sneak peek, I’m going to show you the very first cover I was sent for Never Gamble Your Heart, alongside the final product. There weren’t any major changes, but there were a few details that my editor and I worked on together to make sure it was perfect, because no only do we have to make it visually appealing, but we also have to make it (somewhat) historically accurate.
So, here is the original cover and the final cover. There are five specific differences between them. Can you spot them?
I would definitely need help, so here they are!
What do you think? Did you already know a lot about the cover-making process?
